"Where can I find a clearly written handbook of basic grammar?" I hear this question frequently from university students who ask me to edit their theses and dissertations. At last, it excites me to respond: Kathy Sole’s What's the Rule? This unique manual has three major sections: Punctuation, Grammar, and Sentences and Style and lists a series of clearly written grammar rules followed by explicit illustrations. Chapter layout makes it easy to locate relevant material, and the glossary and index are extremely useful. The rules are color-coded, and variations of fonts help to quickly identify an example of the convention the reader may be seeking. At the same time, I appreciate the straightforward language as well as the several DOs and DO NOTs among the rules. I have edited technical papers for over two decades. You'd be surprised by the erratic punctuation and word usage I see as an editor. Creativity may be welcome in an illustrative story, but not in formal writing. Kathy Sole's What's the Rule? is a great resource for students as well as skilled writers, so I have encouraged each new client to purchase a copy of her easy-to-follow and informative handbook. In the long run, it will make my work go faster.

An Indispensable Desk Reference

Here is a reference book that is easy to use. It is spiral bound with tabbed sections covering rules of punctuation, grammar and style plus a glossary and index. As an author and a publisher, I like the design, two-color printing and clear layout. Kathy Sole proves that a high-content book can be made even more useful with good design. Kathy became motivated to develop this book as a result of her experience teaching community college writing courses and corporate writing workshops. Her students kept requesting a reference to the rules of English that was quickly accessible and written in understandable language. She fulfilled their requests. As an author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I recommend this book to anyone who works with words.

A Great Guide to English Usage

What's the Rule? fills the need of business people to quickly answer everyday English usage questions, without wading through more expansive guides. Kathy has done the "wading" for you, checking each of nearly 300 rules against over 30 writing texts, style guides, and reference books to ensure completeness and to determine the consistency of rules among experts in the field. I was attracted to the Confused Words section (Grammar), differentiating between well over a hundred sets of commonly confused words such as affect and effect, imply and infer, lay and lie, set and sit, and who and whom. Other special features include lists of Roman numerals, and common prefixes and suffixes. What's the Rule? is designed to be used.

This Book Saved Me From Embarrassing Mistakes Many Times

Where was Kathy Sole's book when I was writing my six books on getting your message in front of the media? And I sure could have used this book for my speeches. It's easy to read, understand and grasp. It's very well laid out. Everything I need to help me write right and speak right is at my fingertips. Thank you, Kathy, for taking the mystery out of punctuation and grammar.

When you use the Fertile Material writing exercises, I suggest you forget the old English lesson rules and the pressures of literature for a while and let yourself play. I don't recommend the use of dictionaries, thesauri, or grammar books while writing. But, when the draft is done, Kathy Sole's handbook, What's the Rule?, is my #1 recommendation for polishing a piece of writing intended for publication. It's a godsend to any writer who never really absorbed the rules for grammar in school.

What's the Rule? uses simple structure and language, ease in locating specific rules and solutions, and plainly written examples to make this book a must have for anyone who's seeking confidence when working with the English language.

Writer's Digest

When I first picked up this book, I must admit the first thought was "Why would anyone self-publish a book on such a well-published topic?" But, the author has done exactly what she said she'd do. This is very user-friendly and accessible. What impresses me about this book is the well-organized and comprehensive content. As a writer and editor who uses writing references all the time, I tested the book by looking up several problem issues often inadequately addressed in the stylebooks (comma splice, gerund with possessive). Sole covers all of these adequately. Clearly, the author has invested a lot of time and effort and lends much valuable professional knowledge to the text. I want to commend the author on a very useful reference tool.

Designated as exceptional material (*) and recommended for junior high and middle school students (J), senior high school students (S), and advanced students and adults (A)

The creator of this impressive CD-ROM spent two years researching the kind of grammar and style questions that tend to arise in the workplace before consulting some 40 reference works to ferret out the answers. The result is a well-designed and easy-to-use grammar and usage guide that should prove valuable to writers of all ages. Anyone who has ever struggled with choosing between "affect" and "effect" or debated whether to italicize a title or surround it with quotation marks will appreciate this easy-to-navigate reference tool. Of course, one might turn to any of the dozens of books that the author of What's the Rule? consulted in compiling the disc, but the click-and-search technique that has become second nature to computer users over the past couple of decades proves to be quite convenient and efficient for researching questions of grammar and style. The main menu on the disk's uncluttered opening page offers the user a choice of six tabs: Punctuation, Grammar, Sentences and Style, Glossary, Index, and Quizzes (for self-testing on the topics of confused words, grammar, punctuation, and style). Clicking on any of these tabs opens up a submenu of relevant issues as well as a search feature that allows the user to explore various subtopics, each of which is thoroughly explained through definitions, rules, and practical examples. Although the examples are geared more toward adult office workers than students, they will be no less valuable to young writers in search of clarification. This is a useful, no-frills reference work that should appeal to YAs and business people alike. The fact that I plan to keep it installed for quick reference on my own overcrowded hard drive perhaps best expresses my high opinion of this software.
